What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination, it is absolutely different from IVF. In IUI the semen is taken and then it is processed and washed so that only highly efficient sperms are taken, then those are inserted directly into the womb of the female partner. This is very beneficial for the patients in whom there is some problem in the natural intercourse or if there is some problem in the semen parameter like the motility is less or the counts are low. This process is timed according to the timing of the release of egg from the ovary in the female partner. This is a painless procedure and it doesn’t require any anaesthesia or hospitalization.
Who Benefits From Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
IUI is highly beneficial in the patients in whom there is some problem in the natural intercourse or the males in whom semen parameters are bit deranged (for e.g., if the count is low or the motility is less) in such cases IUI is highly beneficial. IUI is also advisable in the cases of unexplained infertility where any other cause of the infertility is not found, but IUI can be done only if the tubes are open, in cases of blocked tubes IUI is not recommended and the patient is directly referred for IVF.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Treatment Process and Timelines
IUI is usually accompanied with the ovulation induction. The female partner is given certain medicines or injections starting from the second or third day of the periods and then when the egg is formed when injection is given for the release of the egg. IUI is performed 36 hours after the injection which is given for the release. For the procedure the couple has to come to the clinic, the husband has to give the sample then and there only, that sample is washed and then semen is inserted inside the womb of the female partner there at the clinic only, it doesn’t require any anaesthesia or hospitalization . After 15 days of the IUI procedure the patient is called for checking if the pregnancy test is positive or negative.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Who Cannot Go For It
Couples in whom the major problem is with the female partner, i.e. the tubes are blocked, in that case IUI can’t be advised. Similarly if there is a major problem with the semen, i.e. there are no sperms at all, in that case as well IUI can’t be advised with the husband’s semen. Though there is one option of donor semen in such cases, IUI can be done with the donor semen in such cases. In case the sperms are present in the testis but are not present in the semen, then such patients can go for IVF with TESA, i.e. retrieval of sperms from the testis followed by IVF, they are not meant for IUI.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Required Pre Procedure Care
Like any other infertility management the couple is advised to abstain from alcohol and smoke. For IUI, medicines are given for ovulation which have to be started from the second or the third day. The female partner needs to come to the clinic for regular follicle monitoring, i.e. monitoring how the egg is growing by ultrasound. Once the egg is formed, one injection is advised to the female partner and the IUI is usually planned approximately 36 hours after that injection. The male partner is advised to abstain from intercourse for minimum 3 days from the IUI so that the sample that is obtained on the day of IUI is adequate.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) – Required Post Procedure Care
After IUI the patients are advised certain medicines which they have to take for another 15 days minimum. They are advised to abstain from alcohol and smoke. Abstinence from intercourse is not advisable as such, they are advised to have intercourse on the day of IUI and the day after IUI, because intercourse helps in propelling the sperms towards the egg. Otherwise they can do their day to activities, there is no restriction in the normal daily routine activities. Only strenuous activities need to be avoided.
